Why Many Rivers
Rivers are dynamic and constantly changing. They are part of a collective - formed by many smaller creeks and streams. They are a meeting ground. A center of activity. They receive and share nourishment with those around them. The same is true of us; we are a dynamic ecosystem. Many rivers nourish and sustain us.
The Chinese character Pài 派 depicts many tributaries coming together to form a river. This character means lineage and suggests connection to both past and future. That we are the confluence of many different streams that came before. That we influence the future. That our environment shapes us while we shape our environment. That we are in reciprocity.
Many rivers is a metaphor for collective care. It takes many rivers to create, develop, and nourish a landscape. We also require many different supports to flourish - from our ancestors, our communities, our environment, our rest, our nourishment. I am honored to be one of your many rivers.
